At Home in the Green Mountains – Bhutanese Resettlement in Vermont

Speakers: Pablo Bose, Associate Professor in the Department of Geography and the Director of the Global and Regional Studies Program at the University of Vermont

On February 6th, 2017, the Himalaya Program was joined by Pablo Bose of the University of Vermont for a talk about his research on Bhutanese refugee resettlement in Vermont and touching on some of its successes and failures. In his talk, Bose discussed his research within the broader context of refugee resettlement in the United States. Some of the resettlement patterns that he has observed indicate a shift away from large urban centres towards smaller, unconventional towns and suburbs. Bose highlighted the significance of this phenomenon, especially given the current political climate of the U.S.

The talk was followed by a discussion, where Bose shared his hopes for the resettlement program and expanded on some of the aspects of his research.

UBC students, faculty and staff, and members of the Nepali and Bhutanese communities attended this presentation.

This event was sponsored by the Himalaya Program, Centre for India and South Asia Research and Institute for Asian Research.
