Bhutan’s Road to Multi-Party Democracy: The Fourth National Election

Bhutan held its first democratic elections in 2008, transitioning from an absolute monarchy to a constitutional monarchy. The elections led to the establishment of the National Assembly (Lower House) and the National Council (Upper House). The 4th National Assembly elections were held on 30 November 2023 and 9 January 2024. Former prime minister Tshering Tobgay’s People’s Democratic Party (PDP) won the most seats in Bhutan’s parliamentary election and formed the new government. The talks will explore the Bhutan democratic transition and issues faced during the 4th National Election.
