The Democratic Transition in Nepal

Dr. Chaitanya Mishra
Professor Emeritus, Central Department of Sociology, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal

Dr. Chaitanya Mishra’s lecture  was  hosted by the UBC Himalaya Program in partnership with Centre for India and South Asia Research. The room was filled with UBC students, faculty, staff, and alumni from various faculties; individuals from other universities; and members of Vancouver’s Nepali community. In this very well-attended lecture, Dr. Mishra tied his examination of Nepal’s recent political history to trends and dynamics on a global scale, resulting in a presentation and subsequent discussion that transcended disciplinary and regional boundaries. Topics covered included agrarian change, the role of remittances in shaping political transformation, and the role of geopolitics in Nepal’s transition to democracy. The roundtable room set up, and the audience’s diversity fostered meaningful discussion and debate following Dr. Mishra’s presentation.

Sponsored by the UBC Himalaya Program, the Centre for India and South Asia Research and the Faculty of Arts Visiting Speaker Fund.
