Changing Experience and Interpretation of Menstruation in Nepal: An Intergenerational Perspective

Dr. Mira Mishra
Department of Women’s Studies, Tribhuvan University, Kathmandu, Nepal

Dr. Mira Mishra’s talk outlined the intergenerational changes in traditions and understandings of menstruation among women in Nepal. In this brave presentation, Dr. Mishra drew connections between patriarchy and Nepali society’s response to menstruation. Dr. Mishra skillfully wove personal narratives into her talk. Her presentation style fostered an open discussion and spurred many audience members – both men and women – to share their own experiences and stories of menstruation in Nepali and other Asian contexts. The event was well attended by UBC students, faculty and staff, and members of the broader community, including students and instructors from UBC’s Nepali language course.

Sponsored by the UBC Himalaya Program, the Centre for India and South Asia Research and the Faculty of Arts Visiting Speaker Fund.
